Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema on Monday held meetings with representatives of transport and water supply employee unions and directed departments to expedite the process of transitioning eligible outsourced workers to direct contractual employment.
Cheema, who is also Chairman of the Cabinet Sub-Committee constituted to address employee issues and grievances, met representatives of the Punjab Roadways Punbus/PRTC Contract Workers Union, Gram Panchayat Water Supply Pump Operators Association and Social Employees Union.
The union representatives raised concerns over the implementation of provisions relating to the shift from outsourced arrangements to contractual employment and sought timely action following the passage of the relevant Bill.
Cheema said the concerns had been discussed in detail and that the concerned departments were undertaking the required administrative procedures, which would be completed shortly.
He directed departmental officials to ensure that the entire process was transparent and time-bound so that eligible outsourced employees did not face unnecessary delays in receiving the benefits provided under the new legal framework.
“The Punjab Government is committed to taking all necessary steps for the effective implementation of the Bill and ensuring that the eligible workers receive the benefits provided under it,” Cheema said.
The Finance Minister said the government was working expeditiously to complete the administrative process for regularising eligible outsourced workers in accordance with the provisions of the legislation.
Employee union leaders who attended the meetings included Varinder Singh Momi, Resham Singh Gill, Shamsher Singh, Harkesh Kumar Rohi Ram, Baljit Singh, Balwinder Singh Rath, Jagjit Singh, Jatinder Singh, Ranjit Singh, Surjit Kaur, Jasdeep Singh and Baljit Singh.
