A live mortar shell was found in a village field near a CRPF campus in Jaipur’s Amer area on Monday, triggering a security response before the explosive device was safely neutralised by the authorities.
The suspicious object was spotted by a local woman while she was passing through Thakrala ki Dhani in Ward No. 148 at around 10.30 a.m. She alerted her family, following which local residents informed the police control room.
Amer police and a Civil Defence team reached the location shortly afterwards and cleared people from the area. After an initial assessment, the Bomb Disposal Squad was called in and identified the object as a live mortar shell.
Deputy Controller of Civil Defence Amit Sharma said the control room received information at around 11.05 a.m., with police and Civil Defence personnel reaching the spot about eight minutes later.
The shell was secured and moved away from the populated area to an isolated location for disposal. It was placed in a deep pit and neutralised at around 2 p.m., during which a loud explosion was heard.
Amer Station House Officer Gautam Dotasara confirmed that the live mortar shell had been found among waste lying in a field in the village.
Police have registered a case and launched an investigation to ascertain the origin of the shell and how it reached the location.
Civil Defence officials said Sharma led the disposal operation, with CDE Asrar Ahmed, Rajesh Kumar, Yunus Khan, Mohammad Bilal, Deepak Saini and Ghanshyam Sharma among the personnel involved.
