BJP Holds Protest March in Jammu, Accuses Omar Abdullah Govt of Failing on Electoral Promises

Jammu, August 17, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday staged a protest march in Jammu against the National Conference (NC)-led government, accusing the Omar Abdullah administration of failing to fulfil its electoral commitments and deliver on governance and development.

The demonstration was led by BJP Jammu and Kashmir president Sat Sharma, with BJP MP Jugal Kishore Sharma and Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma also joining the protest.

BJP supporters marched from Dogra Chowk, Maheshpura and Panjtirthi towards the Civil Secretariat, raising slogans against the NC-Congress alliance and burning effigies of the government.

The BJP alleged administrative inertia, corruption and failure to address unemployment, inadequate civic amenities, irregular power supply and drinking-water shortages. Senior party leaders demanded accountability from the government and called for Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s resignation, alleging that the administration had failed to meet public expectations.

Sat Sharma accused the government of attempting to divert attention from its alleged failures by repeatedly raising the issue of restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.

He warned that the BJP would expand its agitation across districts, towns and at the grassroots level if the issues raised by the party remained unresolved.

Heavy deployment of police and paramilitary personnel was made along the protest routes and around the Civil Secretariat as the BJP stepped up its confrontation with the ruling administration.

The protest comes amid an intensifying political exchange between the BJP and the NC-led government. While the BJP has been targeting the Abdullah administration over governance issues, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has accused the Centre of failing to honour its commitment to restore statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.

Addressing the Independence Day function at Bakshi Stadium in Srinagar on August 15, Abdullah said Jammu and Kashmir’s decision to join the Indian Union was correct but described the developments of August 2019 as wrong. He was referring to the Centre’s abrogation of Article 370 and the subsequent bifurcation of the erstwhile state into two Union Territories.
