Senior IAS officer Anurag Jain has taken charge as the new Chief Executive Officer of NITI Aayog, bringing nearly four decades of experience in public administration, governance, infrastructure and policymaking to the government’s policy think tank.
NITI Aayog welcomed Jain in a post on X on Monday, marking his assumption of charge as CEO.
A 1989-batch IAS officer of the Madhya Pradesh cadre, Jain has held several senior positions in both the state and Central governments. He previously served as Chief Secretary of Madhya Pradesh and also held the posts of Secretary in the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and Secretary in the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT).
His experience spans infrastructure development, industrial policy, administration and economic development. As CEO of NITI Aayog, he will be involved in supporting the government’s development priorities and strengthening coordination between the Centre and the states.
The government had earlier this year approved Jain’s appointment as NITI Aayog CEO. The appointment was cleared by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), according to an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT).
Jain’s tenure as CEO will be for two years or until further orders, whichever is earlier, on the same terms and conditions that applied to his predecessor.
The appointment comes after the Centre appointed economist Ashok Kumar Lahiri as Vice Chairperson of NITI Aayog in April. Lahiri succeeded Suman K. Bery in the position.
Jain’s elevation to the top executive position at NITI Aayog places an experienced administrator with extensive exposure to both state-level governance and key Central ministries at the helm of the policy institution.
