Punjab Congress Faces Setback in Sangrur as Senior Leaders, Workers Join AAP

Chandigarh, August 17, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Monday received a boost in Sangrur with several senior Congress leaders, former office-bearers, elected representatives and prominent social figures joining the party in the presence of AAP Punjab in-charge Manish Sisodia, MLA Barinder Kumar Goyal and Punjab AAP Media In-charge Baltej Pannu.

Those inducted into the AAP included Sanmeek Singh Hanry, PPCC member and coordinator for Dirba; Prabh Noor Sidhu, State Secretary of the Youth Congress and former District Sangrur vice-president; Advocate Rajnish Gupta, Punjab State Grievance Committee member and Municipal Councillor from Ward No. 6, Lehragaga; Gursevak Singh, former sarpanch of Rorewala and District Congress Committee vice-president; and Lakhwinder Singh, District Congress Committee general secretary.

Also joining were Mandeep Singh, District Congress Committee general secretary and president of the SAP Student Union, Patiala; Veer Singh, former sarpanch of Salemgarh; Sukhwinder Singh, DP Master; Rohit Kumar Singla, property advisor; businessman Rocky Garg; Dr Baljeet Singh, former sarpanch and former chairman of the SC Wing; Gurpreet Singh, former BSF personnel; and businessman Sukhpal Sharma.

Welcoming the new entrants, Sisodia said leaders who genuinely wanted to work for Punjab were increasingly viewing the AAP as a “ray of hope”. He credited party national convenor Arvind Kejriwal with establishing the organisation and Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann with expanding its work in Punjab.

Referring to the state government’s initiatives, Sisodia highlighted measures concerning agricultural water, education, healthcare, free electricity and financial assistance for women. He said the performance of the Mann government was encouraging leaders from other political parties to look towards the AAP.

Speaking on behalf of the new members, Sanmeek Singh Hanry said many of them belonged to families with a long association with the Congress but felt that grassroots workers were being ignored and their contributions were not receiving due recognition.

Hanry said the new entrants wanted to join an organisation where workers were respected and their efforts valued. He also praised Cabinet Minister Barinder Kumar Goyal for work related to agricultural water, schools and other development issues in the constituency.

Taking a swipe at the Congress, Hanry alleged that senior leaders were discussing the allocation of four tickets to a single family while overlooking workers who had served the party for decades. He said this was among the reasons the group chose to join the AAP.

The new entrants said they believed the AAP offered greater recognition to grassroots workers and was committed to Punjab’s development.
