Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday paid tribute to former Prime Minister and Bharat Ratna awardee Atal Bihari Vajpayee on his death anniversary, recalling his exceptional leadership, vision and lifelong service to the nation.
In a post on X, Modi described Vajpayee as an extraordinary statesman whose words and efforts inspired generations. He said Vajpayee’s emphasis on good governance and public welfare would continue to guide the country.
Vajpayee, one of India’s most prominent political leaders, served as Prime Minister on three occasions. His political career was marked by a strong focus on national security, infrastructure, economic policy and diplomacy.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also paid homage to Vajpayee, describing him as a patriot and statesman who devoted his life to the service of the nation.
Shah highlighted Vajpayee’s role in strengthening India’s position globally through the nuclear tests and the Kargil War, while also crediting his value-based politics with advancing the ideals of Antyodaya and good governance.
“His towering personality and leadership,” Shah said, would continue to inspire BJP workers in the task of nation-building.
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju also remembered the former Prime Minister, saying he would always cherish Vajpayee’s “love and blessings”.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar recalled Vajpayee’s enduring contributions to India’s security, economy and diplomacy, saying they would always be remembered and cherished.
Born on December 25, 1924, in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, Vajpayee had a parliamentary career spanning more than four decades. His political legacy remains associated with democratic values, good governance, national security and development.
Vajpayee died on August 16, 2018, at AIIMS, New Delhi.
