Former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday threatened to take the protests against the alleged attack on Trinamool Congress General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee’s Camac Street office to New Delhi, including demonstrations outside the homes of BJP leaders.
Breaking her silence on the purported early-morning attack, allegedly carried out by BJP activists, Mamata Banerjee accused the BJP of sending “goons” to vandalise the TMC office and alleged that party documents and records were destroyed.
Speaking on Facebook Live around 5 p.m., she claimed that four TMC workers were locked inside the office and tortured, while accusing the nearby Shakespeare Sarani Police Station of failing to act.
“BJP sent goons to our party office in the wee hours. All the papers, documents, and records were destroyed. Four of our party workers were locked inside and tortured,” she said.
Mamata Banerjee also warned police officials allegedly connected with the incident, saying, “They should remember that the BJP will not remain in power forever.”
On expanding the protest to the national capital, she said, “If necessary, we will extend our democratic protest to New Delhi. How long will they be able to stop us? How long will you continue with your atrocities?”
“If the atrocities are not stopped, I will be personally going to New Delhi and stage protest demonstrations in front of the houses of the BJP leaders there,” she added.
The former Chief Minister also accused the BJP-ruled West Bengal government of spreading misinformation about her security arrangements. She claimed that security provided to her as a former Chief Minister had been withdrawn long ago and said she did not want security from the state government.
Mamata Banerjee further alleged that more than 4,000 TMC offices had been forcibly occupied by the BJP since the West Bengal Assembly elections earlier this year. She also accused the government of filing new FIRs against TMC leaders and workers on a daily basis.
“I want to warn them, they will get tired of registering FIRs. But they will not be able to stop us,” she said.
Abhishek Banerjee, Mamata Banerjee’s nephew and the TMC’s Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha MP, is the party’s national general secretary.
