A couple and their four-year-old daughter died after the car they were travelling in plunged into a lake at a coffee estate in Badaga Banangala village in Siddapura, Karnataka’s Madikeri district, police said on Wednesday.
The deceased were identified as Vijesh, 36, his wife Pramita, 34, and their daughter Lia. The family lived in the High School Paisiri area of Siddapura.
The incident is suspected to have occurred late Tuesday night when the family was travelling from Siddapura towards Banangala village. The accident came to light on Wednesday morning after workers at a coffee estate spotted the car submerged in a lake and alerted local residents.
When people reached the spot and checked the vehicle, they found all three occupants dead inside, police said.
Siddapura police subsequently reached the scene and launched an investigation to establish the circumstances leading to the accident.
The car was found near a sharp curve. Police suspect that dense fog may have reduced visibility during the night, causing the driver to misjudge the turn and drive the vehicle into the lake. The precise cause of the accident is yet to be established.
The bodies were found inside the car, and police are recording statements as part of the investigation.
