The Trump administration has claimed that more than three million migrants have left the United States since President Donald Trump returned to office, as the White House released an assessment of its immigration crackdown, citing a steep decline in border crossings, mass deportations and tighter restrictions on legal immigration.
In a statement titled “How President Trump Ended the Border Invasion and Restored American Sovereignty,” the White House claimed that the population of immigrants living illegally in the country had declined by at least 2.3 million, calling it the largest sustained reduction in modern American history.
According to the administration, nearly 1.2 million people had been deported or removed, while immigration authorities had made approximately 1.3 million arrests. The figures were presented as the administration’s assessment of its policies and were not accompanied by a comprehensive independent audit.
The White House also claimed that illegal crossings at the southern border had fallen by 95 per cent compared with levels recorded during the Biden administration. Nationwide immigration encounters reportedly dropped below 380,000 in fiscal year 2026, against approximately 2.7 million annually under Biden. The administration further said no migrants apprehended by the Border Patrol were released into the United States during the fiscal year.
The statement said the immigration court backlog had decreased from more than 4.18 million cases to fewer than 3.09 million. However, a lower backlog does not necessarily mean that every affected case was decided on its merits.
The administration also reported that asylum approvals had fallen to approximately seven per cent, compared with more than 50 per cent under the previous administration, attributing the decline to stricter eligibility assessments and enforcement measures.
On legal immigration, the White House said more than 300,000 visas had been revoked since Trump’s return, including thousands of student visas. It also cited new restrictions on H-1B employment visas, widely used by Indian technology professionals, including a $100,000 payment requirement for certain petitions and a revised selection process intended to favour higher-skilled and better-paid workers.
The administration claimed H-1B registrations for fiscal year 2027 had declined by 38 per cent under the revised system. It also highlighted tighter rules for employment authorisation, foreign students and exchange visitors, expanded detention capacity, increased deportation flights and stronger cooperation with state and local authorities.
The White House further said its policies had reduced drug trafficking and deaths associated with illegal crossings. The administration’s assessment covered multiple immigration pathways, including employment, family reunification, education, asylum and permanent residence.
