Amritsar, October 21, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Amritsar Rural Police have arrested seven people, including three juveniles, in two separate operations and recovered a hand grenade, two .30-bore pistols, 29 live cartridges and 3.4 kg of heroin, Punjab Police said on Wednesday.

Punjab Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav said preliminary investigations suggested that the accused were allegedly in contact with foreign-based smugglers and supplying illegal weapons to criminal elements. Investigations are underway to identify the wider network and establish its forward and backward linkages, he added.

Those arrested in the first operation were identified as Ajay, 28, a resident of Mudh Khokhar, and Robin Masih alias Noni, 22, from Sultanwind. In the second operation, police apprehended Gurlal Singh, 20, and Rashpal Singh, 18, both residents of Lopoke, along with three 17-year-old juveniles. An unregistered Hero Splendor motorcycle was also impounded.

Inspector General of Police, Border Range, Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said the first operation followed intelligence inputs that Ajay was allegedly procuring heroin delivered by drones and illegal firearms from across the border for onward supply at the direction of foreign-based gangsters.

Acting on the information, Amritsar Rural Police, in coordination with a central agency, established a checkpoint in the Manawala area and intercepted Ajay and Robin while they were travelling on a motorcycle. A search of a bag carried by Ajay led to the recovery of approximately 3.4 kg of heroin, one .30-bore pistol and 19 live cartridges, police said.

In the second operation, a joint team of the CIA and Lopoke police station staff acted on specific intelligence about the alleged smuggling of arms and explosives through local youths. Police intercepted the group during checking on the occasion of Dussehra and recovered a hand grenade, one .30-bore pistol and 10 live cartridges.

Senior Superintendent of Police, Amritsar Rural, Kanwalpreet Singh Chahal said Ajay was a drug user and a habitual offender facing at least five cases, including four under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and one under the Arms Act.

Two separate FIRs have been registered. FIR No. 204, dated October 19, 2026, was registered at Chatiwind police station under Sections 21 and 25 of the NDPS Act and Section 25 of the Arms Act. FIR No. 334, dated October 20, 2026, was registered at Lopoke police station under Section 25 of the Arms Act and Sections 3, 4 and 5 of the Explosive Substances Act.
