Punjab Police have dismantled an alleged drug trafficking, illegal arms and explosives smuggling network with the arrest of seven accused and the recovery of a hand grenade, two pistols and 3.491 kg of heroin, Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav said on Wednesday.
The DGP said preliminary investigations revealed that the accused were allegedly in contact with foreign-based smugglers supplying illegal weapons for further distribution among criminal elements.
First Information Reports (FIRs) have been registered at the Chatiwind and Lopoke police stations in Amritsar. Further investigation is underway to uncover the entire network and establish its links, Yadav added.
The development follows a separate operation last week in which Counter Intelligence (CI), Amritsar, busted a cross-border arms and explosives smuggling module and arrested five people, including a father-son duo.
During that operation, police recovered one .30-bore assault rifle, two hand grenades and 13 sophisticated foreign-made pistols.
The arrested accused were identified as Gurpreet Singh and his son Jaskaran Singh, both residents of Ballarwal village in Ajnala, Amritsar; Veenu, a resident of Sagarpur in Batala; Amritpal Singh, a resident of Rasulpur village in Batala; and Gaurav Masih, a resident of Gounspura village in Batala.
The recovered weapons included four 9mm Glock pistols and nine .30-bore pistols, along with 25 cartridges. Police also impounded two motorcycles allegedly used to transport the consignments.
Sharing details of the operation, DGP Yadav had said Amritsar Police received specific intelligence that Gurpreet and Jaskaran were in regular contact with a foreign-based smuggler. The duo allegedly retrieved consignments of arms, ammunition and explosives dropped by drones across the border and supplied them to other operatives on the smuggler’s instructions.
According to the police, the intelligence input indicated that Gurpreet and Jaskaran were scheduled to meet their associates near Teri village in Ajnala to deliver an arms and explosives consignment. Acting on the information, police apprehended all five accused at the spot and recovered the weapons and explosives.
Police are continuing their investigation to establish the full extent of the smuggling operations and identify other individuals allegedly involved.
