Indian equity benchmarks ended lower for the second consecutive session on Wednesday, weighed down by losses in auto, metal and select heavyweight stocks. Selling pressure intensified in the broader market, with smallcap stocks registering a sharper decline.
The BSE Sensex fell 143.21 points, or 0.19 per cent, to close at 73,709.69. The NSE Nifty declined 77.60 points, or 0.34 per cent, to settle at 22,811.35.
Among the Nifty constituents, Bajaj Finance, BSE Limited and Eternal were among the session’s biggest losers, adding to the pressure on the benchmark indices.
The broader market underperformed the headline indices. The Nifty MidCap 100 dropped 1.58 per cent, while the Nifty SmallCap 100 slumped 2.37 per cent, reflecting heightened selling pressure in mid- and small-cap stocks.
Sectoral performance remained mixed. The Nifty Chemical, Nifty Consumer Durables and Nifty Metal indices were among the major laggards, while the Nifty IT index emerged as the top sectoral gainer, outperforming the broader market.
On the technical front, market experts said the Nifty needs to sustain a move above the 23,000 mark to improve its short-term outlook. Failure to reclaim that level could leave the index vulnerable to further declines, with selling pressure likely to persist at higher levels despite intermittent recovery attempts.
The immediate support zone lies between 22,650 and 22,600, followed by 22,300. A decisive break below 22,600 could intensify selling and expose the index to the 22,300–22,200 range, analysts said.
Looking ahead, market direction is likely to depend on corporate earnings, progress in trade negotiations and foreign investor flows. A sustained moderation in crude oil prices, global bond yields and currency volatility would also be important for market stability, experts added.
