India secured a memorable one-two finish in para athletics at the Asian Para Games on Wednesday, with Dilip Gavit Mahadu winning gold and Mohammed Basil Morssinganakathi claiming silver in the men’s 100m T47 final.
Gavit, competing in the T46 classification, clocked 10.69 seconds to take the gold medal, while Basil, competing in T47, finished in 10.72 seconds and set a new Games Record.
The result mirrored the Indian pair’s one-two finish at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, where Gavit won gold with a Games Record and Basil secured silver in the men’s 100m T47.
Gavit has been a prominent figure in India’s para-athletics campaign in recent years. He won gold in the men’s 400m T47 at the 2022 Asian Para Games, securing India’s 100th medal at the edition. He also reached the men’s 400m T47 final at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.
Born in Toran Dongari village near Nashik in Maharashtra, Gavit grew up in a farming family. At around five or six years of age, he suffered a serious injury to his right arm after falling from a tree. The injury later developed into gangrene due to a lack of timely medical treatment, eventually resulting in amputation below the elbow.
Despite the setback, Gavit took up running and trained on the roads of his village. His talent was later spotted by coach Vaijnath Kale, who helped him enter competitive para-athletics.
The T46 and T47 classifications are for standing athletes with upper-limb impairments. T46 generally covers athletes with significant impairment or amputation of one arm, while T47 includes athletes with less severe upper-limb impairment and is primarily associated with sprint and jump events.
