Paris, October 20, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

France will impose fresh curfews in areas where the situation demands such measures, Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu said on Tuesday, noting that restrictions introduced in several cities a day earlier had helped maintain calm amid violent protests and looting.

Lecornu also thanked police officers, gendarmes and prefects for their efforts in enforcing the restrictions and managing the situation.

“Targeted curfews have contributed to the calm of this night. I thank the police officers and gendarmes who ensured their enforcement, as well as the prefects for their mobilisation. Tonight, new curfews will be decided where the situation requires it. These decisions will be made on the ground, by the prefects, in coordination with the mayors,” Lecornu said in a post on X.

In Paris, curfews remained in force in two areas affected by looting over the weekend: Place de la République in the city’s centre-east and the Châtelet–Les Halles area. The restrictions were in effect from 11 p.m. on Monday until 6 a.m. on Tuesday. Authorities had also prohibited gatherings in the two areas from 8 p.m. on Monday, France 24 reported.

In Lyon, authorities imposed a curfew in the central area after a tourist office was set on fire during protests on Saturday. A ban on public gatherings was also introduced in parts of the city from 6 p.m. on Monday.

In Nice, a curfew was imposed from 9 p.m. on Monday until 6 a.m. on Tuesday, but it applied only to unaccompanied minors, according to France 24.

Similar restrictions targeting unaccompanied minors were introduced in Lille and the towns of Douai, Wattignies and Denain, running from 8 p.m. on Monday until 6 a.m. on Tuesday. The measures were limited to designated areas.

On Sunday, French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said more than 2,000 people had been arrested following violent protests across the country on Saturday.

Clashes between police and protesters erupted in Paris and other parts of France during nationwide marches against rising inflation. Several locations were set on fire, while looters broke into dozens of shops and stole goods.
