Around 10 people were injured after a balloon containing a suspected flammable chemical burst during a fire scene in a theatrical performance in Bihar’s Siwan district, triggering panic among spectators, officials said on Wednesday.
The incident took place on Tuesday night in Rasulpur village, under the jurisdiction of Barharia police station, where a play was organised following Durga Puja festivities. A large crowd had gathered to watch the performance.
According to the preliminary investigation, actors were using a balloon containing a chemical substance during a scene involving fire when it suddenly burst. The substance spilled onto spectators seated near the stage, injuring several people and causing chaos at the venue.
Local residents rushed to help the injured and arranged for their transportation to Barharia Referral Hospital, where they received medical treatment. Two of the injured were reported to be in critical condition. Their identities and latest health updates were not immediately available.
The incident has raised concerns among villagers about safety arrangements at theatrical performances involving fire and potentially hazardous materials.
Siwan police have launched an investigation and are recording statements from villagers and the injured to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident. A forensic team has also been called to collect evidence, including samples of the chemical substance, to determine its nature.
Preliminary findings suggest that balloons containing chemical substances were being used during the performance. Police may take action against those responsible based on the outcome of the investigation.
An official said an FIR would be registered based on the victims’ statements and the findings of the probe. Further details about the cause of the balloon burst and the condition of the injured are awaited.
