Punjab Police observed the 67th State-Level Police Commemoration Day at the Punjab Armed Police (PAP) Headquarters in Jalandhar on Wednesday, paying tribute to personnel who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty.

Punjab Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav led the homage ceremony and laid a floral wreath at the Police Martyrs’ Memorial. Special DGP Law and Order Praveen Kumar Sinha and ADGP PAP MF Farooqui also attended the event.

Yadav said 1,804 Punjab Police personnel had laid down their lives since September 1981, including two who attained martyrdom this year. He described the force’s legacy as one of courage, selflessness and determination, reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding national integrity and maintaining communal harmony in the border state.

The ceremony featured a commemoration parade, the reading of the names of personnel who had died in the line of duty over the past year and a two-minute silence in their memory. Senior officers also laid wreaths to honour the fallen personnel.

Speaking to the media, Yadav said Punjab Police had registered more than 95,000 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act since March 16, 2022, resulting in over 1.27 lakh arrests and the recovery of more than 7,260 kg of heroin.

He said properties worth ₹902 crore linked to drug traffickers had been frozen and claimed the force had achieved a 90 per cent conviction rate. According to the DGP, anti-gangster operations launched in April 2022 had dismantled 1,288 organised criminal modules and led to the arrest of more than 3,300 alleged gang members.

Outlining the next phase of the Yudh Nashian Virudh campaign, Yadav said identified drug hotspots were being monitored round the clock through joint efforts by senior police officers and gazetted officers of the civil administration as part of an intensive 60-day drive. The initiative aims to reclaim affected areas through enforcement, community outreach and the creation of playgrounds and opportunities for young people.

The DGP also highlighted plans to disrupt criminal financial networks, strengthen cyber security and modernise police infrastructure, citing an investment of more than ₹1,600 crore. He said Punjab Police had raised concerns with police chiefs in other states about the unauthorised supply of banned pharmaceutical drugs into Punjab.

After the ceremony, Yadav met the families of police martyrs, heard their concerns and assured them of continued support from the Punjab Government and the police department.

Special DGPs, ADGPs, IGs, DIGs and other senior police officers attended the event.

History of Police Commemoration Day

Police Commemoration Day is observed across India every year on October 21 in memory of 10 CRPF personnel who were killed in an ambush by Chinese forces at Hot Springs in Ladakh on October 21, 1959. The patrol was led by Sub-Inspector Karam Singh. The personnel’s sacrifice in the harsh conditions at an altitude of around 16,000 feet became a lasting symbol of courage and duty.
