At least 10 people were killed and 44 others injured after a bus overturned following a collision with a road divider on the Indus Highway in Rojhan tehsil of Rajanpur district in Pakistan’s Punjab province, local media reported on Wednesday, citing rescue authorities.

The accident occurred in the Bangla Hidayat area at around 5:45 a.m. local time. The bus was reportedly speeding when it hit the divider and overturned, according to a report by Pakistani daily Dawn.

Rescue 1122 said the deceased included seven men, two women and a girl.

More than 38 injured people were being treated at the District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital in Rajanpur. Four critically injured persons were referred to Dera Ghazi Khan, while two others who sustained serious injuries were shifted to Sheikh Zayed Hospital in Rahim Yar Khan.

Local rescue authorities said they responded promptly after receiving information about the accident, dispatching 10 ambulances and two rescue vehicles to the site. A total of 35 rescuers took part in the emergency response.

Pakistan has witnessed several serious road accidents involving passenger vehicles in recent months.

In August, two people were killed and 42 others injured after a bus carrying a wedding party overturned on the Kohlu-Dera Ghazi Khan highway in Balochistan province.

According to police, the bus was travelling from Rakhni to Kohlu when the accident occurred. A police official told Dawn that overloading was believed to have contributed to the accident.

Police and rescue personnel reached the scene and shifted the injured to a hospital in Kohlu, where a woman and a child succumbed to their injuries.

Earlier, on May 10, at least five people were killed and 10 others injured after a passenger van fell into a ravine in Charbagh tehsil of Swat, The News International reported.

Rescue officials said five people died at the scene, while 10 others sustained injuries. The victims reportedly belonged to the same family and were travelling from Adu to Ganajir to attend a wedding when the vehicle met with the accident. Brake failure was cited as a possible cause.
