Punjab Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav on Wednesday led tributes to police personnel who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty during the 67th state-level Police Commemoration Day observance at Punjab Armed Police (PAP) headquarters in Jalandhar.

Yadav laid a floral wreath at the Police Martyrs’ Memorial, accompanied by Special DGP (Law and Order) Praveen Kumar Sinha and ADGP M.F. Farooqui.

Addressing the gathering, the DGP said 1,804 Punjab Police personnel had laid down their lives since September 1981 while serving the state and the country. Two personnel had attained martyrdom this year, he added.

Paying homage to the fallen officers, Yadav said their sacrifices had helped preserve peace and security in Punjab. He highlighted the force’s legacy of courage and determination in combating militancy, safeguarding the state’s borders and maintaining communal harmony.

A ceremonial parade was held at the memorial, where the names of personnel who had died in the line of duty during the past year were read out by the Commandant. The ceremony concluded with a two-minute silence and floral tributes by senior police officers.

Speaking to the media after the event, Yadav outlined the force’s action against drug trafficking. He said more than 95,000 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act had been registered since March 16, 2022, resulting in over 1.27 lakh arrests and the seizure of more than 7,260 kg of heroin.

He said properties worth ₹902 crore belonging to drug traffickers had been frozen and claimed that the force had achieved a 90 per cent conviction rate in such cases.

On the anti-gangster front, Yadav said operations launched in April 2022 had led to the dismantling of 1,288 organised criminal modules and the arrest of more than 3,300 gang members.

He also said the ‘Yudh Nashian Virudh’ campaign had entered an intensive 60-day phase, with senior police officers and gazetted civil administration officials jointly monitoring designated drug hotspots around the clock. The initiative aims to address drug-related problems through sustained enforcement, community outreach and the development of playgrounds to engage young people.
