A 19-year-old second-year Chemical Engineering student at the Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT) in Mumbai was found dead in his hostel room in Matunga, prompting a police investigation.
The student, identified as Siddhesh Patil, was a native of Nashik and lived in the institute’s hostel. According to preliminary information, the incident occurred at around 10.30 p.m. on Tuesday.
Mumbai Police have registered an Accidental Death (AD) report and launched an investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding his death.
According to information linked to the case, Patil had reportedly been experiencing mental health difficulties in recent days and was receiving treatment.
On Tuesday, he allegedly sent a message to his doctor expressing emotional distress. The doctor subsequently informed the student’s family, who contacted his hostel friends and asked them to reach his room immediately to check on him.
However, the friends reportedly arrived after the incident had occurred.
Matunga Police are gathering information and examining the sequence of events. Further details are awaited as the investigation continues.
The incident has renewed attention on the mental well-being of students pursuing higher education away from their families and the importance of accessible mental health support and timely intervention during periods of emotional distress.
In a separate incident in September, a second-year student at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay died by suicide after reportedly being found using a mobile phone during an examination. The incident triggered student protests on the institute’s Powai campus and was reported as the third student suicide there in six months.
The student, identified as Sahil Wakode, was pursuing his second year in the Department of Energy Science and Engineering. According to the institute, he had uploaded an examination question paper to ChatGPT in an attempt to obtain answers while the test was underway.
IIT Bombay said no disciplinary proceedings had been initiated against Wakode. The institute stated that the examination instructor and the Head of the Department had discussed the matter with him, counselled him and assured him that the incident would not adversely affect his academic career.
