Indian para-athlete Pranav Desai won the bronze medal in the men’s 100m T64 event at the Para Asian Games on Wednesday, clocking 11.96 seconds to secure a podium finish.
Desai improved on his performance at the 2022 Hangzhou Para Asian Games, where he finished fourth with a timing of 11.91 seconds. Although his latest timing was 0.05 seconds slower, he moved up one position to claim a medal.
Hailing from Thane, Maharashtra, Desai is a congenital right below-knee amputee who has been competing in para sports since 2017. He specialises in the T64 sprint events, the 100m and 200m. The T64 classification covers athletes with lower-limb impairments who compete using prostheses.
India had earlier celebrated another successful outing in para-athletics, with Dilip Gavit Mahadu winning gold in the men’s 100m and Mohammed Basil Morssinganakathi taking silver.
Gavit clocked 10.69 seconds to secure the gold medal, while Basil finished in 10.72 seconds, setting a new Games Record. The Indian duo also achieved a one-two finish at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, where Gavit won gold with a Games Record and Basil claimed silver.
The T46 and T47 classifications apply to standing athletes with upper-limb impairments, including limb deficiency or amputation. The categories distinguish athletes according to the nature and extent of their impairment.
Desai’s bronze adds to India’s medal tally in para-athletics, highlighting the country’s performances across sprint events at the continental competition.
