Chandigarh, October 20, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) president Pargat Singh has challenged Union Home Minister Amit Shah to explain what concrete action the BJP-led Central Government has taken to dismantle major drug trafficking networks, curb the illegal sale of pharmaceutical drugs and protect Punjab’s youth from addiction.

Speaking to the media during Dussehra celebrations, Pargat Singh said the BJP had been in power at the Centre for 13 years, with Amit Shah serving as Union Home Minister. He argued that the Centre could not escape responsibility for the continued spread of the drug trade in Punjab and other states.

Questioning the effectiveness of the government’s response, the Congress leader asked whether the Union Home Minister was unaware of the ground realities or, if fully informed, what decisive measures had been taken to address the crisis.

Pargat Singh said slogans about a ‘Drug-Free India’ and grand announcements would not resolve the problem without a comprehensive strategy, strict enforcement and clear accountability between the Central and state governments.

He stressed that drug trafficking in Punjab was not merely a law-and-order issue for the state government. According to him, Central agencies had an important role in tackling cross-border narcotics supplies, organised trafficking networks, major smugglers and the illegal pharmaceutical drug trade.

The PPCC president demanded that the Centre disclose the results of its action against major drug networks, including the measures taken to disrupt supplies and bring those involved in the illegal trade to justice.

Pargat Singh Calls for Time-Bound Action Against Drug Trade

Highlighting the social consequences of drug addiction, Pargat Singh said families across Punjab were distressed as young people fell prey to substance abuse. He described protecting the younger generation as a responsibility that demanded effective governance rather than political rhetoric.

He urged the Central Government to release a comprehensive account of the steps taken to combat drug trafficking and the results achieved so far. He also called for time-bound measures to dismantle the entire drug supply chain.

Pargat Singh said the BJP government and Amit Shah must answer the people of Punjab over the failure to achieve decisive control of the drug menace despite years in power.

He maintained that political accusations and counter-accusations could not secure the future of Punjab’s youth, insisting that accountability, strong enforcement and action against the entire trafficking network were essential to tackling the crisis.
