Jaipur, October 20, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Congress leaders and workers in Jaipur continued their sit-in at the Police Commissionerate on Tuesday, demanding the registration of a Zero FIR over the alleged assault and mistreatment of NSUI National Secretary Ritu Barala in Delhi.

The protest, which began on Monday evening, entered its 24th hour amid rising tensions between Congress workers and police personnel. On Tuesday, protesters raised slogans outside the Commissionerate, leading to a scuffle with the police. Police reportedly used mild force to disperse the demonstrators.

Jaipur Police maintained that a separate FIR was not required, citing an existing case at Delhi’s Connaught Place Police Station concerning the October 13 incident. Additional Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Ajay Singh said Barala’s complaint had been attached to the ongoing investigation.

Rajasthan Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) chief Govind Singh Dotasra challenged the police to produce a copy of the FIR registered in Delhi, saying the Congress would call off its protest if the document was presented.

“Let the police show us which FIR has been registered in Delhi. If they can produce it, we will leave immediately. The police have, in fact, registered an FIR against these youngsters in Delhi,” Dotasra said.

He maintained that registering a Zero FIR was the party’s legal right and questioned the police’s reluctance to register one in Jaipur. He also referred to a Zero FIR registered in Kerala and accused the police of making incorrect statements. Dotasra said the Congress remained open to dialogue but would continue its protest until the issue was resolved.

Dotasra arrived at the Commissionerate at around 6.15 p.m. on Monday. He and other Congress leaders spent the night sleeping on the floor at the protest site and had tea and breakfast there on Tuesday.

During the sit-in, Dotasra reportedly asked a fellow Congress leader where the Jaipur Police Commissioner could be found. The leader allegedly replied, “In the BJP camp.”

The protest followed a reported phone call from Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, who allegedly asked Dotasra to ensure that an FIR was registered in Jaipur in connection with the matter.

Rajasthan Leader of Opposition Tikaram Jully also questioned why an FIR had not been registered despite Barala submitting complaints in Delhi and Jaipur. He alleged that her complaint in Delhi had not been formally registered and that her subsequent complaint in Jaipur had also gone unaddressed.

“Do these BJP members consider themselves above the law?” Jully asked, criticising the authorities over the handling of the matter.

He accused those who publicly advocate women’s safety and dignity, including through the ‘Beti Bachao’ campaign, of failing to uphold those principles in Barala’s case. He demanded that the police register an FIR.

Jaipur Police said Barala had submitted a complaint at Connaught Place Police Station in Delhi on October 13, the day of the incident, and that Delhi Police were investigating the matter. The Jaipur Police maintained that registering another FIR on the same set of facts would be legally inappropriate.

Police also disputed Barala’s claim that she had been unable to file a report in Delhi because she was occupied with medical treatment.
