A clothing tag found on the decomposed body of a woman helped Bengaluru police identify her and arrest her husband, who allegedly strangled her following a dispute over money and dumped her body at a vacant site, police said.
The accused, Sagar Chandra Rawat, 32, and his wife Anusuya, 28, were from Odisha and had married after falling in love. Both were working at different hotels in Bengaluru.
According to the police investigation, the couple had a heated argument over a financial matter on August 11. Anusuya had reportedly gone to Rawat’s hotel demanding his salary before the dispute continued after they returned home.
Police allege that Rawat strangled Anusuya during the argument. He then allegedly kept her body inside their house for three days before wrapping it in a mattress, tying it with ropes and dumping it at a vacant site in MS Nagar Agrahara Layout.
The case came to light on September 2 when workers arrived to clean the vacant plot. The cleaning was undertaken after the site owner sent them there in compliance with rules requiring vacant sites to be maintained.
The workers noticed a mattress tied with ropes and raised an alarm after detecting a foul smell. Police were called to the spot, where officers opened the mattress and recovered the decomposed body of an unidentified woman. Police said the body had also been partially eaten by stray dogs.
Investigators initially faced difficulty establishing the woman’s identity because of the condition of the body. A clothing tag bearing the name of a mall, however, provided a crucial lead. Police traced details associated with the tag and an accompanying bill, which helped establish the victim’s identity as Anusuya.
Investigators subsequently traced Rawat and arrested him nearly 20 days after the alleged murder.
Police said the couple had frequently quarrelled over financial issues. The investigation is continuing.
