An Indian national was killed after a commercial vessel carrying 14 Indians came under attack near Limah off the coast of Oman, prompting India to condemn the strike and call for an immediate de-escalation of tensions in the region.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Tuesday that 13 of the 14 Indian nationals aboard the vessel, identified as MSV AL JUSUFI, had been rescued. The deceased suffered injuries in the attack.
The Indian Embassy in Oman is coordinating with local authorities for the early repatriation of the rescued crew members and the mortal remains of the deceased, the ministry said.
Expressing concern over repeated attacks on commercial shipping, the MEA called for an end to strikes targeting civilian infrastructure and vessels. It also urged the parties concerned to conclude ongoing negotiations towards a diplomatic solution and restore safe, uninterrupted navigation and commerce through international waterways in accordance with international law.
The latest incident comes amid a series of attacks involving vessels carrying Indian seafarers in the region.
On October 11, the tanker MT Petro Dolphin, carrying 11 Indian crew members, was hit by a drone at Sohar Anchorage in Oman. Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal had said that nine crew members were rescued, while two remained missing. Search-and-rescue operations were underway, with Indian authorities coordinating with their Omani counterparts.
Earlier, on October 6, India had condemned an attack on MT On Peace off the Omani coast while it was transiting the Strait of Hormuz. The vessel was carrying 17 Indian nationals, and 12 crew members, including 11 Indians, were injured in the incident.
India has reiterated that attacks on commercial shipping must stop and that freedom of navigation through the region’s international waterways must be protected.
