Chandigarh, November 2, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

A Punjab Police Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) has been suspended after purported hidden-camera footage from a religious leader’s residence in Khanna allegedly showed him placing a packet beneath a bed mattress shortly before a police raid. Mahant Kashmir Giri, who was arrested in the case, has also been cleared of the charges.

Khanna SSP Darpan Ahluwalia suspended ASI Sukhdev Singh, who was posted with the Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) staff, and removed him from the investigation.

The case began after police arrested Giri’s driver, Gurjant Singh alias Janta, for allegedly possessing 7.5 grams of heroin. Acting on information reportedly obtained during his interrogation, police raided Giri’s residence and claimed to have recovered around 30 grams of heroin from beneath a mattress. Giri was subsequently arrested on drug trafficking charges.

However, footage from a hidden camera installed by the family has raised questions over the alleged recovery. The video, which has circulated on social media, purportedly shows ASI Sukhdev Singh entering a room in plain clothes and placing a packet beneath the mattress. Another police personnel later enters with Giri, and the subsequent search reportedly leads to the recovery of heroin from the same spot.

A Special Investigation Team (SIT), headed by an officer of Superintendent of Police rank, has been constituted to examine the video’s authenticity, the ASI’s alleged role and the circumstances surrounding the recovery.

The incident has triggered a political controversy, with Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) chief Sukhbir Singh Badal targeting the Bhagwant Mann-led government over the functioning of the Punjab Police.

In a post on X, Badal said, “Welcome to the AAP model of ‘Law & Order’! A Khanna Police ASI was caught on CCTV secretly placing a packet of drugs beneath a mattress inside someone’s home!”

He further wrote, “The AAP government in Punjab had promised home delivery of services, but who knew that this would also include the Punjab Police delivering drugs to people’s homes to implicate innocent citizens? Is this how the Punjab Police is delivering ‘Badlav’ under your supervision, Guru Dokhi Bhagwant Mann?”
