Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde on Monday criticised actor Dia Mirza over her video promoting a pollution-free Diwali, alleging that the actress had consistently opposed Hindutva and those working for it.
Speaking to reporters, Tawde said Hindus did not need anyone to teach them how to celebrate Diwali. She accused Mirza of pursuing a selective agenda and cited her alleged opposition to the Narmada project, the Uniform Civil Code and statements by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“We have consistently seen her opposition directed against Hindutva and those who work for it. Secondly, we do not need Dia Mirza to teach us how Hindus should celebrate Diwali,” Tawde said.
The Mayor also questioned the civic administration for not sharing with her the complete list of celebrities selected for the pollution-free Diwali awareness campaign. She said the administration should keep the Mayor informed about decisions and seek approval before implementation.
Tawde acknowledged that the High Court had directed prominent artists and celebrities to promote a Diwali celebration without firecrackers amid rising air pollution levels. However, she said the list of selected celebrities should have been shared with her in her capacity as Mayor.
Meanwhile, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has deleted a video featuring Dia Mirza from its campaign after Mumbai BJP chief Ameet Satam objected to her inclusion, triggering a political controversy.
In her statement, Mirza said the video was recorded to encourage healthier and more mindful celebrations. “Air pollution is a matter of public health, and every effort towards reducing it is a step towards a better environment for all,” she said.
The actress also described Diwali as a festival celebrating the triumph of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance and hope over despair.
