The Delhi High Court on Monday stayed the operation of Jawaharlal Nehru University’s (JNU) order dismissing Congress MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam from service following an inquiry into sexual harassment allegations made by 11 female students.
A single-judge Bench of Justice Anup J. Bhambhani passed the interim order while hearing Akoijam’s plea challenging his dismissal. The court also issued notice to JNU and listed the matter for further hearing in January.
Separately, Akoijam has approached the Rouse Avenue Court seeking anticipatory bail in a case registered by Delhi Police. His plea is scheduled to be heard on Tuesday.
According to JNU’s October 9 order, Vice-Chancellor Santishree D. Pandit dismissed Akoijam with immediate effect following an inquiry by the university’s Internal Committee. The complaints were submitted by 11 female students in May this year. The university said disciplinary action was based on the committee’s findings and taken after following due process under applicable service rules.
On October 15, Akoijam appeared before Delhi Police at Vasant Kunj North police station after being summoned to join the investigation. Describing the matter as a “political matter”, he said he had appeared to cooperate with the probe and did not want his absence to be construed as non-cooperation.
