A woman employee of a shop in Bengaluru was held at knifepoint and threatened with death by a man who allegedly attempted to snatch her gold chain. Members of the public intervened, overpowered the accused and rescued her before handing him over to the police.
The incident occurred around 11.45 a.m. on October 31 at a branded bag and shoe repair shop on Domlur 100 Feet Road. It came to light on Tuesday after a video of the incident circulated widely on social media, raising concerns over women’s safety.
According to police, the accused, identified as Prabhuraj, entered the shop wearing a helmet and gloves. The woman employee, who had opened the establishment at 10 a.m., was alone at the time.
The man allegedly told her that someone was chasing him before grabbing her and demanding that she hand over her gold chain. When she resisted, he caught her by the neck, held a knife close to her throat and dragged her outside.
Footage of the incident shows the woman pleading for help as the accused threatens her and says he will take her away in an autorickshaw. When bystanders confronted him and asked him to release her, he allegedly threatened to slit her throat.
People gathered at the spot eventually managed to overpower the man and free the woman. They restrained and assaulted him before handing him over to the police.
Indiranagar police reached the scene and arrested the accused. DCP East Vikram Amte said the man had allegedly entered the shop intending to commit chain snatching but grabbed the woman and threatened to kill her when members of the public tried to catch him.
Further investigation is underway.
