Generation Z employees in India prefer spending more time in the office than their millennial counterparts, with an average preference of 3.4 working days a week, according to a report by Savills India.
The findings challenge the broader trend of younger employees favouring fewer days at the workplace. While younger millennials prefer 3.2 office days a week and older millennials 3.3 days, employees from Generation X and the Baby Boomer generation prefer 3.5 days.
Across all age groups, respondents currently report attending the office for approximately four days a week.
The report identifies reliable, high-quality Wi-Fi as the most essential workplace amenity across generations. However, younger employees place greater importance on access to public transport, gyms and Pilates studios, while meeting rooms become a higher priority among older respondents.
Despite their preference for relatively frequent office attendance, Gen Z employees place considerable importance on work-life balance. All respondents from this generation described it as either moderately or extremely important.
The report also found that Gen Z employees face the longest commutes, with 46 per cent travelling for 41 minutes or more to reach their workplaces. Savills India attributed this trend potentially to the availability of more affordable housing outside city centres.
Restaurants emerged as the highest-rated nearby amenity across all age groups, while gyms and wellness centres had stronger appeal among younger employees.
Arvind Nandan, Managing Director, Research and Consulting at Savills India, said organisations would need to rethink workplace design, technology and connectivity to make office attendance more meaningful as the workforce evolves. He also highlighted the importance of public transport links and nearby lifestyle facilities in meeting younger employees’ expectations.
