The Government Medical College in Barmer, Rajasthan, has taken disciplinary action against 80 students following an investigation into allegations of ragging, obscene WhatsApp messages and mental harassment of junior students by seniors.
The action was initiated on complaints from affected students after the college’s Anti-Ragging Committee examined the allegations and recommended disciplinary measures.
As part of the action, 13 students have been permanently expelled from the college hostel, while six have been suspended from academic activities for 60 days. Seven others have been barred from attending classes for 30 days, and 11 students have been suspended from the hostel for the same period.
The administration has also issued warnings to 34 students, cautioning them that any further involvement in ragging or similar misconduct could result in immediate expulsion from the college.
In addition, all students facing disciplinary action have been barred from participating in sports and cultural activities for one year. Five junior students from the 2026 batch have also received warnings and been advised to maintain proper conduct.
College Principal Dr Anoop Gurjar said the administration acted after receiving information about senior students allegedly demanding introductions from a batch of 130 juniors, with the matter also surfacing on social media.
“Recently, senior students were seen on social media demanding introductions from a batch of 130 junior students. As soon as we received this information, immediate action was taken,” Gurjar said.
He added that the Anti-Ragging Committee conducted an inquiry and confirmed the allegations before recommending action.
The principal also said that 250 CCTV cameras had been installed across the campus to monitor activities.
The administration has maintained that it will adopt a strict approach towards ragging, harassment and other forms of student misconduct to ensure a safe academic environment.
