New Delhi, November 2, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday inducted three Punjab legislators who have recently quit the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), giving the ruling party in the state a political setback months before the 2027 Assembly elections.
The MLAs joined the BJP at its headquarters in New Delhi. They include Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh, Chetan Singh Jouramajra and Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra.
Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh, who represents Amritsar North and is a former IPS officer, resigned from AAP on Monday and also submitted his resignation to the Punjab Assembly Speaker. He had been suspended from the party for five years in June 2025 over alleged anti-party activities after opposing the arrest of Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia in a disproportionate assets case.
In a message to the people of Punjab on X, Singh said he would remain grateful for their support and called for a collective effort to address issues including drugs, extortion, gangsterism and corruption.
He also claimed to have achieved 90 per cent of his targets as an MLA, describing his efforts to end the “mai-baap” culture in politics and raise constituency-specific issues in the Assembly as major achievements.
His move follows the exits of Sanaur MLA Pathanmajra and Samana MLA Jouramajra, who announced their resignations from AAP on Sunday.
Pathanmajra submitted his resignation to party national convenor Arvind Kejriwal, citing his decision to quit the party with immediate effect. The legislator has also faced legal controversy, including a rape case registered against him in September 2025 on charges of rape, cheating and criminal intimidation. He had allegedly evaded arrest after escaping from police custody and was wanted in connection with the case.
Jouramajra, a former Punjab minister, announced his departure through social media. Reports have linked his differences with the party leadership to the appointment of former Shiromani Akali Dal leader Surjit Singh Rakhra as AAP’s in-charge for the Samana constituency, a move reportedly seen as a setback to Jouramajra’s influence in the area.
The three inductions come amid preparations for the 2027 Assembly polls, with AAP having recently announced its first list of 40 candidates.
