New Delhi, November 2, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)
Digi Yatra has begun trials for international passengers at seven airports across India, allowing eligible Indian e-passport holders to use digital identity verification at selected airport touchpoints while travelling on certain international flights.
The trials, scheduled to continue through November and December 2026, are being conducted at Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Cochin, Mumbai, Chennai and Amritsar airports, the Ministry of Civil Aviation said on Sunday.
The facility will initially be available to eligible Indian nationals travelling on select international flights operated by Air India and IndiGo. Passengers will be able to use it at terminal entry points, Security Hold Areas and boarding gates wherever the necessary infrastructure is available.
To participate, passengers must generate an e-passport-based Verifiable Credential (VC) through the Digi Yatra mobile application. The process involves scanning the passport’s Machine Readable Zone, reading its embedded chip through the Near Field Communication (NFC) feature of a compatible smartphone, taking a selfie and verifying the details.
The credential is stored in the passenger’s Digi Yatra wallet on the device and can then be used at participating airport touchpoints.
The ministry clarified that the facility is intended to supplement existing travel procedures and will not replace mandatory documentation or checks. Passengers must continue to carry their travel documents and complete airline verification, immigration and other applicable formalities.
Feedback gathered during the trial period will help the government plan a wider rollout in 2027.
Digi Yatra currently has more than 26.5 million users and has facilitated over 110 million journeys across 39 domestic airports. Another 25 domestic airports are planned to be brought under the platform by 2027.
