IndiGo to Prioritise Short-Haul Network Despite Global Expansion Plans: CEO Willie Walsh

New Delhi, November 3, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

IndiGo will maintain its focus on short-haul operations even as it expands its international network and prepares to introduce wide-body aircraft, Chief Executive Officer Willie Walsh said on Tuesday.

Addressing the Aviation India and South Asia 2026 conference, Walsh said the airline’s growth strategy would continue to rely on the efficiency of its narrow-body operations, which remain central to its low-cost business model.

IndiGo currently operates four Airbus A321XLR aircraft and expects the number to increase to 14 by the end of 2027, he said.

The airline is also preparing to induct Airbus A350-900 wide-body aircraft, with deliveries expected to begin in the second quarter of 2028. Walsh, however, emphasised that substantial preparation would be needed before the carrier begins operating the new aircraft type.

“We must ensure we do not lose focus on the work required to maintain a highly efficient short-haul operation while preparing for future opportunities,” he said.

Walsh described IndiGo’s cost structure as a key competitive advantage and said maintaining operational efficiency would remain essential as the airline pursues expansion.

He also called for stronger cooperation between airlines and airport operators, urging airports to exercise discipline in investment decisions so that additional costs do not place an excessive burden on airlines and passengers.

India’s largest airline by market share currently operates a fleet of more than 440 aircraft and has set a target of expanding it to around 600 by 2030.

Walsh took charge as IndiGo CEO earlier this year following his appointment by parent company InterGlobe Aviation. He succeeded Pieter Elbers, under whose leadership the airline expanded its domestic and international operations.

With the planned induction of long-range aircraft, IndiGo aims to increase its global reach while retaining its short-haul network as the foundation of its business.
