Authorities in Spain have completed the identification of all 69 people killed in last week’s high-speed train collision in Urda, central Spain, while 29 injured passengers remain hospitalised, including nine in intensive care.
Spain’s Integrated Data Center (CID) confirmed on Monday that the provisional death toll stands at 69. The victims comprised 54 Spanish nationals and 15 foreigners. All were adults, including 40 men and 29 women.
Among the foreign nationals killed were four Americans, two Australians, two Japanese citizens and one person each from Argentina, Canada, the Czech Republic, France, Mexico, Portugal and Tunisia.
The identification process was completed by the Institutes of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences in Toledo and Ciudad Real. Fingerprint analysis conducted by the Civil Guard’s Criminalistics Service identified 56 victims, while DNA testing by the National Institute of Toxicology was used to identify the remaining 13.
Authorities said the families of all victims had been informed. Relevant consular offices were also notified in cases involving foreign nationals.
Meanwhile, Castilla-La Mancha’s regional government said 29 injured people were still receiving treatment in four hospitals, with nine in intensive care and 20 in general wards. Of the 110 patients initially admitted to six hospitals, 81 have been discharged. Nine patients have been transferred to hospitals in Madrid and another to Andalusia.
Recovery work at the accident site has also advanced, with all carriages of the two trains involved — operated by Iryo and national railway company Renfe — removed from the tracks.
The Renfe AVE carriages were shifted overnight to a secure area, while the last two carriages of the Iryo train were cleared from the Madrid-Andalusia high-speed railway line on Monday afternoon.
The Civil Guard continues searching the site for human remains, with around 50 officers deployed in the area.
