More than 44,000 government buildings across India are now connected to solar energy, generating annual savings of around Rs 700 crore, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Monday at the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit in New Delhi.
Highlighting India’s progress in renewable energy over the past 12 years, Modi said the government was expanding solar power access across industries, farms and households.
He said more than 30 lakh farmers had received solar-powered irrigation facilities under the PM-KUSUM scheme, with each farmer estimated to save around Rs 1 lakh annually through solar pumps.
The Prime Minister said the government aimed to bring all government buildings, schools, colleges, hospitals and street-lighting systems under solar energy.
He also highlighted the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, launched in February 2024 with a target of installing rooftop solar panels in one crore households. More than 65 lakh households have joined the initiative in the past 24-25 months, he said.
Modi further stated that India had achieved its Paris Agreement target of meeting 50 per cent of installed electricity capacity from non-fossil fuel sources in 2025, five years ahead of schedule. He said more than half of the country’s installed power capacity now came from non-fossil fuel sources.
