The Indian Navy has rescued all 20 crew members of the fishing vessel Azini after a 48-hour operation in the Arabian Sea, more than 3,000 km from Mumbai, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said on Tuesday.
The operation, completed on November 2, involved locating and intercepting the vessel and securing the release of its crew from heavily armed pirates, with timely support from the Indian Air Force.
Congratulating the Navy personnel involved, Singh said the mission demonstrated India’s operational preparedness and ability to respond to maritime security threats across the wider region.
In a post on X, the Defence Minister described the mission as a “meticulously coordinated 48-hour operation” and praised the swift localisation and interception of the vessel.
He said the safe recovery of all 20 crew members and the vessel reflected the Navy’s high operational readiness and its capacity to act decisively against threats far from the Indian coastline.
“Our brave personnel have once again demonstrated India’s ability, intent and resolve to safeguard lives, uphold maritime security and ensure stability across the Indian Ocean Region,” Singh said.
He also reiterated India’s commitment to maintaining safe maritime routes and a free, open and secure Indian Ocean Region.
The operation highlighted the coordination between the Indian Navy and the Indian Air Force in responding to piracy and other maritime security challenges in distant waters.
The successful rescue comes as India continues to emphasise its role in safeguarding shipping and maritime interests across the Indian Ocean Region.
