Ramesh Bishnoi, cousin of jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, on Monday said Bollywood actor Salman Khan should apologise to the Bishnoi community over the blackbuck poaching case, warning of unspecified consequences if he failed to do so.
The remarks came following a firing incident targeting actor Tiger Shroff in Mumbai, after which a person claiming links to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang circulated a video online claiming responsibility and warning Shroff against working with Salman Khan.
The Lawrence Bishnoi gang has had a long-running animosity with Salman Khan over the actor’s alleged involvement in the 1998 blackbuck poaching case in Rajasthan during the filming of Hum Saath Saath Hain. Khan was convicted by a trial court in 2018, a verdict he has challenged in higher courts, while maintaining his innocence.
Speaking to IANS, Ramesh Bishnoi said he had heard the same warning contained in the audio circulating in connection with the incident involving Shroff.
“As you heard in the audio, I heard the same thing: That we have stopped him and want to warn him again that anyone who works with Salman Khan could face consequences,” he said.
Ramesh clarified that he was quoting the gang’s stated position rather than making the threat in his own name.
“These are not my words, I’m just citing their emotions on the matter,” he said.
He also urged Salman Khan’s family to reconsider its position, claiming that the issue had caused anger within the Bishnoi community.
“I want to tell Salman Khan’s family to give up their stubbornness. This is an issue affecting the entire community, and there is widespread anger within it,” he added.
Ramesh further claimed that Lawrence Bishnoi was expressing the community’s anger rather than pursuing a personal dispute with the actor.
“Lawrence has no personal dispute with Salman Khan, nor is it a personal dispute with the community. The issue is that he has hurt our religious sentiments. There is widespread anger within the community,” he said.
He added that Lawrence had offered what he described as a straightforward solution: Salman Khan should come forward and apologise. Ramesh claimed that the actor was unwilling to do so.
Meanwhile, Tiger Shroff narrowly escaped injury on Sunday after three men on a motorcycle allegedly opened fire at his car in Mumbai’s Juhu area. The actor’s driver was injured in the incident, police said.
According to Mumbai Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Zone II, Mohit Garg, three rounds were fired at the 36-year-old actor’s car as he was leaving a playground where he had gone for football practice.
The injured driver was taken to Nanavati Hospital for treatment. Police also said that other people in the area, including an autorickshaw driver, were injured.
The firing triggered panic in the area, with people running for cover after hearing the gunshots. Police cordoned off the scene, and a forensic team collected evidence.
On Monday, Rajasthan Police arrested three suspects, including a minor, at Kota railway station in connection with the case.
Acting on intelligence that the suspects were travelling to Kota aboard the Pune-Jaipur Express, a police team intercepted and searched the train. The operation was completed in approximately 15 minutes, following which the three were taken into custody.
The arrested suspects were identified as Rehan alias Sukka, a resident of Sonipat in Haryana; Hrithik Kurmi alias Roshan, a resident of Begusarai in Bihar; and a minor.
Hours after the firing, a video circulated on social media in which a man identifying himself as Anil Pandit and claiming to be associated with the Lawrence Bishnoi gang took responsibility for the attack. The man described the firing as a warning to Tiger Shroff to stop working with Salman Khan.
The claims made in the video and the alleged links to the gang remain subject to investigation.
