Bengaluru, October 16, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

A 20-year-old BTech student died after allegedly jumping from the sixth floor of a building at GITAM University in Nagadevanahalli village in Bengaluru Rural district, prompting police to launch an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The deceased has been identified as Varshitha, a native of Guntakal in Andhra Pradesh. According to preliminary information, she had been staying in the university hostel for the past six years and had been pursuing her BTech degree for the last three years.

Police said Varshitha allegedly jumped from the sixth floor of the building on Thursday night. Although depression is being considered as a possible factor, investigators are examining the circumstances leading to her death, and the exact cause has not been established.

Personnel from Doddaballapur Rural Police reached the spot and initiated an investigation. Given the seriousness of the incident, Bengaluru Rural Superintendent of Police Chandrakanth M.V. also visited the location.

As part of the investigation, police inspected Varshitha’s hostel room and seized her mobile phone for examination. Her parents have been informed and are reportedly on their way to the university.

Bengaluru Rural SP Chandrakanth M.V. said there were reports that Varshitha had a medical history, which would be verified during the investigation. Police are examining all relevant circumstances and will take appropriate legal action based on their findings, he added.

The latest incident has drawn attention to previous cases involving student deaths at the university’s hostel campus.

On February 18, a 20-year-old computer science and engineering student, identified as Nayana S.V., allegedly died after jumping from the 13th floor of a hostel building at the university’s Nagadevanahalli campus. Nayana, a native of Sarjapura in Bengaluru Rural district, was the daughter of a farmer.

According to the preliminary investigation at the time, Nayana had recorded a video on her mobile phone apologising to her parents before her death. Police said no death note was recovered from her or her hostel room, while her family members were reportedly unaware of any possible reason behind the incident.

In another incident in April 2022, a 24-year-old final-year engineering student from Uganda, identified as Haseena, died after falling from the sixth floor of the GITAM University hostel campus.

According to reports, she had allegedly been trying to retrieve a piece of cloth that had fallen onto the asbestos roof of a neighbouring building when she fell from the sixth floor to the first floor. She was taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared her dead on arrival.

The incident had triggered protests by students, following which police resorted to a lathi charge to disperse the demonstrators.

Police are continuing their investigation into Varshitha’s death, and further details are awaited.
