The dispute within the Janata Dal (United) over the Patna Graduates’ constituency MLC election has intensified after Mokama MLA Anant Singh claimed that he had supported Nitish Kumar during the early days of his political career and made significant sacrifices, including an allegation that he had “got nine people murdered.”
Singh also criticised the party’s decision to field Neeraj Kumar as its candidate, while reiterating his loyalty to Nitish Kumar, the former Bihar Chief Minister.
In an exclusive interview with IANS, Singh described himself as a devoted supporter of Nitish Kumar and maintained that he was not challenging the senior leader.
“I am a devotee of Nitish. I am not challenging anyone,” Singh said, asserting that he had made considerable sacrifices in support of Kumar over the years.
Asked whether he continued to support the JD(U), Singh said, “Who has made as many sacrifices as I have? Nitish Kumar was nothing back then. He used to roam around here and there. At that time, while being with Nitish Kumar, I got nine people murdered.”
Singh’s remarks came amid growing tensions over the party’s choice of Neeraj Kumar for the Patna Graduates’ constituency MLC election. He argued that the JD(U) had made a mistake by giving Neeraj Kumar the ticket, claiming that he had stood by Nitish Kumar since the early stages of the latter’s political career.
Singh also referred to past political rivalries, alleging that Neeraj Kumar had opposed him previously. He questioned the party’s decision to nominate a candidate with whom he had differences.
Despite his objections, Singh sought to distinguish his disagreement over the candidature from his relationship with Nitish Kumar. He said he was prepared to follow the party’s directions on other matters, while making clear that his grievance concerned Neeraj Kumar and the candidate-selection process rather than the senior leader.
Known locally as ‘Chhote Sarkar,’ Singh has maintained a prominent political presence in Mokama. His opposition to the official JD(U) candidate has added to tensions within the party as it prepares for the MLC constituency contest.
According to reports, efforts have been made at multiple levels within the JD(U) to resolve the disagreement. Discussions reportedly involved state party president Umesh Kushwaha and other senior leaders, while the possibility of involving Nishant Kumar was also discussed.
However, the dispute remains unresolved, with Singh continuing to voice his objections to Neeraj Kumar’s candidature. The disagreement poses a challenge for the JD(U) as it seeks to maintain unity during the MLC election campaign.
