Ramgarh, October 15, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Eastern Army Commander Lieutenant General VMB Krishnan visited the Sikh Regimental Centre and Punjab Regimental Centre at Ramgarh Cantonment on Thursday, ahead of the discharge of the Indian Army’s first batch of Agniveers, expected in December 2026 or January 2027.

During the visit, the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Command reviewed training and administrative arrangements for Agniveers approaching the end of their four-year service tenure. He expressed satisfaction with the contemporary training methods and ongoing infrastructure development at the centres.

Officers briefed Lt Gen Krishnan on training modules and administrative procedures. He also interacted with troops and presented commendation badges.

The regimental centres and their associated Record Offices will play a key role in the transition of Agniveers completing their tenure. Their responsibilities include issuing discharge orders, processing the selection records of personnel retained for further service, conducting exit medical examinations and completing final service documentation.

Under the Agnipath scheme, up to 25% of each batch may be retained for regular service, subject to organisational requirements and selection criteria. The remaining personnel complete their four-year engagement and return to civilian life.

The centres and Record Offices also coordinate transition paperwork and the processing of the Seva Nidhi package. Agniveers completing their tenure are expected to receive approximately Rs 11.71 lakh tax-free under the package, along with a skill-set certificate. Their service records, including performance assessments and feedback gathered during the four-year tenure, are also maintained.

The Indian Air Force has already completed the retention process for 712 Agniveer Vayus from the first batch of 2,850. The Navy’s first batch is expected to be discharged in November, while the Army’s larger first-batch discharge is anticipated around December 2026-January 2027.

To support their transition into civilian employment, the government has reserved 50% of constable posts in the Central Armed Police Forces for Agniveers. A similar reservation has been announced for rifleman posts in the Assam Rifles. Several states have also introduced recruitment measures, while West Bengal has plans to strengthen the Eastern Frontier Rifles by recruiting Agniveers from the state’s hill districts.
