Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez has apologised for publicly criticising the club’s hierarchy following the team’s 2-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League, acknowledging that his frustration influenced his comments.
The 28-year-old had questioned the club’s investment in the squad after Tuesday’s loss, suggesting that head coach Michael Carrick had been left with inadequate resources. He also called for greater action from technical director Jason Wilcox.
Martinez later admitted that he had expressed his views at an inappropriate time and place. Reports said the club had fined him over the remarks.
In a statement posted on social media, Martinez said he had met the club’s leadership and Carrick for a discussion that allowed both sides to exchange their views openly.
“The frustration of the defeat led me to express how I felt at a time and place that perhaps were not the right ones, and for that I want to apologize,” he said.
Martinez stressed that unity was essential as Manchester United sought to return to success. He acknowledged that his comments had not helped the team and said everyone at the club shared the same ambition.
Carrick is scheduled to address the media on Friday ahead of Sunday’s match against Leeds United. It remains to be seen whether Martinez will feature in the game.
The defender’s current contract expires at the end of the season, although Manchester United have the option to extend it by another 12 months.
The defeat to Atletico Madrid adds to a difficult start to the campaign for United, who have won only two of their last nine matches across all competitions. The club sit 13th in the Premier League standings, with six points from six games.
