Outgoing British High Commissioner to India Lindy Cameron has expressed pride in the achievements of India and the United Kingdom in strengthening bilateral relations, saying the partnership has created opportunities for people and businesses in both countries.
In a farewell video message shared by the UK High Commission in India on X on Friday, Cameron highlighted the India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and the Vision 2035 roadmap as key milestones in the relationship. She said the FTA had helped boost the economies of both nations, while Vision 2035 had strengthened cooperation across defence, technology, education, innovation and climate.
“Hello India, what a journey… It’s been an extraordinary privilege to serve here. I think there’s nowhere quite like India. I’m so proud of everything we’ve achieved to deliver for people across all corners of both of our great countries,” Cameron said.
She emphasised that the people behind the partnership were its most important asset, recalling her interactions with representatives from government, business, education and civil society during her tenure in New Delhi.
Cameron said people across India had contributed to expanding bilateral cooperation and creating fresh opportunities for individuals and businesses in both countries.
“As I move on to my next job back in London, India will always have a really special place in my heart,” she said.
Expressing confidence in the future of bilateral ties, Cameron said she was leaving India proud of the progress achieved and optimistic about the next phase of the relationship.
“The UK-India relationship has got extraordinary momentum,” she said, adding that her deputy, Ben Miller, would take over as Acting High Commissioner.
Cameron thanked people in India for their friendship, support and cooperation, describing her tenure as a genuine honour. She concluded her message with the words, “Phir Milenge India, we’ll meet again soon.”
Cameron has been appointed Permanent Under-Secretary at the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), becoming the first woman to hold the position.
Announcing her appointment on September 10, British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband said Cameron brought extensive experience in diplomacy, development and national security, along with a reputation for dynamic leadership across international postings.
“I am delighted that Lindy Cameron has been appointed as Permanent Under Secretary of the FCDO,” Miliband said, praising her leadership and most recent service as British High Commissioner to India.
Miliband said Cameron would lead an FCDO focused on promoting British values and interests by drawing on the capabilities of its staff. He also thanked Nick Dyer for his work as Interim Permanent Under-Secretary.
Cameron’s departure marks the end of her tenure as the UK’s top diplomatic representative in India, as she prepares to take up her new responsibilities in London while expressing confidence in the continued momentum of India-UK relations.
