Former Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer Divya Mittal on Thursday announced the launch of her political party, ‘Jan Neeti Bharat’, and said it would contest the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.

Announcing the beginning of her political journey on social media, Mittal outlined three key principles that she said would guide the party’s approach to public service.

In a post on X, the former bureaucrat said people and their concerns would be at the centre of the party’s policies and decisions, rather than being expected to adjust to a predetermined political agenda. She also emphasised the need for political representatives to remain accountable to the public throughout the year, not merely during elections.

An alumna of IIT Delhi and IIM Bengaluru, Mittal previously worked as a Wall Street trader before joining the IAS. She resigned from the civil service on August 30 after a 13-year career. On September 29, she had announced her intention to enter politics, saying her political journey would begin in Uttar Pradesh and that she wanted to work directly with people rather than align herself with an existing political party.

Although Mittal has yet to announce her detailed electoral strategy or identify the constituencies from which her party will contest, speculation has emerged about a possible candidature from Mirzapur, where she served as District Magistrate.

During her more than decade-long administrative career, Mittal served as District Magistrate in districts including Mirzapur and Deoria. She gained recognition for her work on extending piped-water access to remote villages in Mirzapur.

Mittal has also cited several administrative and governance-related shortcomings as factors that influenced her decision to enter politics. These included schools that were sanctioned but never constructed, leased land that was not handed over to intended beneficiaries, damaged roads linked to fatal accidents, and uncertainty faced by students affected by examination paper leaks.

With the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections approaching, the launch of Jan Neeti Bharat marks Mittal’s transition from the civil service to electoral politics. The party’s organisational plans, candidate selection and wider campaign strategy are yet to be detailed.
