Veteran singer Kumar Sanu became emotional while recalling his musical journey with Alka Yagnik and expressing concern over her health, saying he hopes to hear her “magical voice” again soon.
The singer shared his feelings during an upcoming special episode of Sa Re Ga Ma Pa 2026, which will celebrate his 69th birthday with a musical tribute. A performance by contestant Geetashree reminded him of the romantic songs he recorded with Yagnik and the cherished memories they share.
“As many of you know, Alka ji is not keeping well, and that makes me very emotional,” Sanu said, recalling that some of the most romantic songs of his career were recorded with her.
He praised Yagnik’s brilliance as a singer and expressed his wish to see her return to the stage.
“I sincerely hope she recovers soon and returns to join us in front of all of you once again,” he said, adding that listening to the song brought back memories of their recording sessions and the musical moments they shared.
“It truly saddens me to know that she is unwell. Through this performance, I would like to pay tribute to her by singing a few lines of this song, with the hope that she gets well soon and we get to hear her magical voice again,” Sanu added.
Kumar Sanu and Alka Yagnik have sung more than 500 duets together, making them one of the most celebrated playback-singing pairs in Hindi cinema.
Yagnik had revealed in a social media post two years ago that she was diagnosed with a rare sensorineural hearing loss condition following a suspected viral attack. She said she had suddenly lost her ability to hear after stepping off a flight, describing the experience as an unexpected setback.
In June, Yagnik received the Padma Bhushan from President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi. Reflecting on the honour, she expressed gratitude to listeners who had embraced her voice across generations and supported her through both achievements and personal challenges.
Sanu’s tribute on the upcoming television episode will celebrate their musical partnership while reflecting the concern and affection he holds for his longtime singing companion.
