President Droupadi Murmu has accepted the resignation of Union Minister of State L. Murugan from the Union Council of Ministers, with immediate effect, following advice from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the President’s Secretariat said on Thursday.
The resignation was accepted under clause (2) of Article 75 of the Constitution, according to an official statement.
Murugan, who held the portfolios of Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs, had asked Modi to relieve him of his ministerial responsibilities so that he could focus full-time on strengthening the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Tamil Nadu ahead of the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.
In a letter to the Prime Minister, shared on his official X account, Murugan said he wanted to return to grassroots politics and work directly with party workers across the state.
“Now, I wish to return to the grassroots, stand with our karyakartas and dedicate myself full-time to strengthening the BJP in Tamil Nadu ahead of the 2029 Lok Sabha elections,” he wrote.
Murugan said Modi’s recent visit to Tamil Nadu and the public response it received had strengthened his belief in the BJP’s prospects in the state. He pledged to visit villages and streets, meet people and work towards expanding the party’s presence.
He also said he wanted to take the Prime Minister’s message of inclusive development to more people and encourage families to contribute to the vision of a developed India.
Emphasising what he described as the guiding principle of his political journey, Murugan wrote: “Nation First. Party Next. Self Last.”
He referred to his nearly three decades of association with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and the BJP, describing his tenure in the Union government as the greatest honour of his life.
Murugan also recalled his humble background as the son of daily-wage labourers. His parents, who also worked as cattle grazers, continued to lead a simple life in Konur village, he said.
His resignation marks a shift from ministerial responsibilities to a direct organisational role in Tamil Nadu as the BJP prepares for the next general election.
