Five missiles targeted Al-Ma’ashiq Palace, which houses Yemen’s internationally recognised government, in the southern port city of Aden on Thursday, amid escalating hostilities involving the Houthi group and Saudi Arabia.

A local security official, speaking anonymously, told Xinhua that the missiles struck towards the palace in Aden’s Crater district and blamed the attack on the Houthis. The official said the extent of casualties and damage had not been established.

A Xinhua reporter in Aden reported hearing loud explosions, with smoke rising from the area around the palace. Residents living nearby said the blasts shook their houses.

The reported attack came as the Houthis renewed their warning to international airlines against using Saudi airspace and airports, describing them as “unsafe”. Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree said in a statement posted on X that the warning applied across Saudi airspace, except over the Muslim holy cities of Mecca and Medina.

Saree also denied that the Houthis had launched an attack towards Saudi territory on Thursday, rejecting a Saudi allegation that an attack had been directed towards Medina.

The latest developments follow a series of military warnings and interceptions reported by the Saudi-led coalition. On Tuesday, the coalition said it would warn civilians to evacuate a site in the Houthi-controlled capital, Sanaa, ahead of what it described as a “special operation”. Coalition spokesperson Turki Al-Maliki announced the planned warning on X but did not identify the location or provide details of the operation.

The coalition also said it had intercepted and destroyed three drones north of Riyadh on Tuesday.

The incidents point to continued tensions between the Houthis and Saudi Arabia, with both sides issuing military warnings and reporting security threats in recent days. Details surrounding Thursday’s missile attack in Aden, including responsibility for the strike, had not been independently established in the available account.

Yemen has been embroiled in conflict since late 2014, when the Houthis seized Sanaa and large parts of the country’s north, forcing the internationally recognised government from the capital. The government subsequently established its base in Aden with backing from the Saudi-led coalition.
