Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said Kyiv will resume attacks on Russian oil refineries, accusing Moscow of continuing strikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure despite a proposed ceasefire and expressing frustration over recent US decisions affecting Ukraine’s military capabilities.
In an interview with the Financial Times, Zelensky said Ukraine had temporarily halted attacks on energy targets for three days in response to the energy ceasefire announced by US President Donald Trump. However, he argued that Russia had continued its attacks on Ukrainian energy facilities.
“The block (on attacking refineries) is out. We’re done,” Zelensky was quoted as saying, signalling that Ukraine no longer considered itself bound by the temporary pause.
Trump said last week that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to an immediate energy ceasefire intended to halt attacks on energy infrastructure. However, questions have emerged over the extent of Moscow’s commitment to the proposal and reports of continued Russian strikes.
Zelensky criticises US restrictions
The Ukrainian president also criticised Washington over the reported curtailment of intelligence support and restrictions affecting Starlink satellite internet services, describing the developments as dangerous for Ukraine.
On Wednesday, Ukraine said SpaceX, the US aerospace company that operates Starlink, had restricted services, disrupting Ukrainian drone operations used for attacks and air defence.
During a visit to London on Wednesday, Zelensky told British broadcaster Piers Morgan that he felt “betrayed” by the recent US moves.
“They (the United States) wanted us not to attack diesel. My opinion was it’s not fair,” he said, referring to restrictions on attacks against Russian energy targets.
He also questioned the decision to restrict Starlink services, describing it as “really strange” and “something absolutely crazy”.
Asked whether he was angry with SpaceX chief executive Elon Musk, Zelensky replied, “I think he is not right. It’s a big mistake.”
He added that he did not know whether Musk had taken the decision independently or whether someone had pressured him to do so.
Trump says Putin more willing to reach a deal
The dispute comes as the Trump administration continues to pursue a settlement to end the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Trump said Russian President Vladimir Putin appeared more willing than Zelensky to reach a peace agreement.
“I think, actually, Putin wants to make a deal more than Zelensky,” Trump told reporters at the White House before leaving for a political rally in Ohio.
His remarks came amid questions about Russia’s continued attacks on Ukraine and whether Moscow had agreed to the US proposal to suspend strikes on energy infrastructure.
Trump maintained that both countries supported the ceasefire initiative, although a reporter pointed out that Putin had not publicly committed to the proposal.
Zelensky’s latest comments indicate that Ukraine’s temporary restraint on attacks against Russian energy facilities may end, potentially adding another point of contention to already strained relations between Kyiv and Washington as diplomatic efforts to end the war continue.
