The three-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted by Punjab Police to investigate the rape case registered against former Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) member and senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Amarjit Singh Chawla has summoned two Akali leaders for questioning.
The SIT has issued summons to former SAD MLA Virsa Singh Valtoha and Youth Akali Dal president Sarabjit Singh Jhinjer, asking them to join the investigation.
SSP Simranjit Singh Lang, a member of the three-member SIT, confirmed the development on Thursday.
He said the investigation team had already met the Bahrain-based woman complainant, recorded her version of the allegations and inspected the alleged crime scene.
“Taking the probe forward, we have now summoned Virsa Singh Valtoha and Sarabjit Singh Jhinjer,” SSP Lang said.
The case stems from an FIR registered on the complaint of a Bahrain-based woman who accused Amarjit Singh Chawla, a former SGPC member and former senior vice-president of the SAD, of rape and criminal intimidation.
The complainant has alleged that Chawla sexually assaulted and threatened her at various serais associated with prominent Sikh religious shrines, including Sri Darbar Sahib.
In her complaint, the woman also alleged that she had travelled to India on air tickets arranged by Valtoha and Jhinjer.
Both Akali leaders have already denied the allegation concerning the air tickets.
The SIT’s decision to summon the two leaders comes as investigators examine the circumstances surrounding the complainant’s visit to India and the allegations made in her FIR.
The summons have been issued for questioning as part of the investigation. No finding of wrongdoing against Valtoha or Jhinjer has been established on the basis of the information available.
