Actress Sandeepa Dhar has recalled the memorable first narration she received from director Aatish Kapadia for the recently released OTT show ‘Chumbak’, saying his ability to bring every character to life immediately convinced her that she wanted to be part of the project.
Speaking to IANS during the promotions of the Netflix show in Mumbai’s BKC area, Sandeepa said she was amazed by the way Kapadia narrated the story, playing every character himself and changing his voice, tone and mannerisms for each one.
“He played all the parts, he played all the characters, so he was changing voice from one character to another, tonality, everything changed. So he did the mannerisms, he fully became that character and within like five minutes, he had done everything,” she recalled.
Sandeepa said Kapadia even created the background music during the narration, leaving her impressed before she had even met him properly.
“I was just looking at him like, ‘Oh my god, what is this person?’ I had not met Aatish before that and I was like, just by the virtue of this, I would want to work with this person to learn because he’s just so awesome,” she said.
The actress added that reading the script only strengthened her desire to be part of the show. She described it as extremely funny and said the project reflected Kapadia’s distinctive wit, humour and emotional sensibility.
Sandeepa, who plays Kiran in the series, said she would have accepted any role in the show because of the opportunity to work in such a creative setup.
“I think it’s every actor’s dream to kind of work in this kind of a setup. So, it was amazing,” she added.
‘Chumbak’, which also stars Sumeet Vyas, Sumeet Raghavan, Neena Gupta and Manasi Parekh, is currently streaming on Netflix.
