India ended the 46th Chess Olympiad 2026 with two medals as the men’s Open team won silver and the women’s team secured bronze after both sides drew their final-round matches in Samarkand on Sunday.
The Indian men played out a 2-2 draw against Hungary to finish second in the Open standings. World champion D Gukesh was defeated by Hungary’s Gleb Dudin, while Arjun Erigaisi secured a win against Peter Leko.
Host Uzbekistan claimed the Open gold after defeating Ukraine 2.5-1.5 in the final round. Mukhiddin Madaminov delivered the decisive result by beating Roman Dehtiarov.
Uzbekistan finished two points ahead of India and Germany to secure its second Chess Olympiad title. India took silver on tiebreaks, while Germany won bronze after a 2.5-1.5 victory over the Netherlands, with Matthias Bluebaum defeating Jorden van Foreest.
The Indian women also finished on the podium after drawing 2-2 against Georgia. Savitha Shri played a crucial role for India, holding Meri Arabidze to a draw after finding herself in a difficult position. The result was enough for India to secure third place.
China won the women’s gold after beating Vietnam 3-1, while Kazakhstan took silver after drawing 2-2 with Poland. China finished two points clear at the top to claim its seventh Women’s Chess Olympiad title.
India secured the women’s bronze on tiebreaks, finishing ahead of the United States, Poland, Armenia and Mongolia.
The double medal haul capped a strong campaign for India, with both the Open and women’s teams finishing among the top three at the prestigious global team championship.
